Hobbies

Ginny, one of our volunteers talks of her love of DJing and why hobbies can be so important especially after you've lost someone close.

"I got into Djing after my sister died. I was looking for loads of things to do at that time. At first I was looking for things that would distract me from thinking about her too much. I did loads of things. I went to the gym twice a week (which is totally unlike me), I started Salsa classes, I went out a lot at weekends, I took up painting again, I went to visit a lot of friends and lots more. All this may sound good, but I soon realised that I was overloading myself so that I didn’t have to think. When I realised this, I slowed down a bit and chose the things that really mattered to me. I have to admit that the gym went out the window for a while, but the decks stayed. I still saw friends, but less often, and I painted every now and again. This was a much better balance for me.

I have two turntables and a load of vinyl. I love dance music and have just starting mixing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to try but never had the guts really. I thought it was just for boys and that my friends would laugh at me. No one did laugh, they all think it’s great and a lot of them have asked me to play at their house parties. I had to save up for the decks too, but it’s been worth it.

I get a lot out of Djing. It really helped me when my sister was killed in a car accident. As it was such a shock to me, and I needed something that could give me something else to focus on, even if it was only for ten minutes each day. It was a bit of an escape really. It didn’t mean that I stopped thinking about her altogether, but I could have a bit of a rest and I knew that she would want that for me. Putting my energy into learning a new skill was definitely positive. Music is very powerful too. Dance music makes me feel upbeat, a feeling that I wasn’t experiencing that much at the time.

There are lots of other positive things that I get from DJing. It’s something that I can do anytime I’m at home. It gets me out and about if I play at other people’s houses, and I’ve even met new people through doing it. I always try to talk to the DJs in our local bars and clubs to ask where they buy their music, and I go to see big DJs play (like Judge Jules) so that I can pick up tips! I think that most of all I have got more confidence from it. I was always rubbish at acting and performing in front of people at school, but this is something that I can do that other people can enjoy. And everyone’s nice to you because they either a) want their song played or b) want a go themselves!"
