Help Yourself When you lose someone, many people do one of two things. Some throw themselves into activities, such as work or going out. And many others withdraw from activities, and stay in a lot more. They stop doing the things they enjoyed before. Both can have their advantages in the short term, but they also have their downsides. Too much time doing things can wear you out, and too much time alone can stop you getting the support that you may need and make it harder to get back into things later on through a lack of confidence. To stay healthy and to be able to cope, we need to be somewhere in the middle, and also have a balance of different activities. If
we have too much of one type of activity and not enough of others, we
can get pretty stressed out. It’s easy to see how the first two things may stress us out, but you may think that the last example is ridiculous. How can you have too much time having fun? Well, if you spend too much time doing enjoyable things, who’s doing all the other stuff we’re supposed to do around the house? Or our homework or our jobs? Those things will mount up and will need doing at some time. Also, those things are actually good for us. Although you may not enjoy school or your job all the time, they make us who we are and give us identity, meaning, and confidence when we do things well. They help us prepare for the future. And even household chores are a good thing. They show us that we can be successful at things and look after ourselves. So if we didn’t have those things, our lives would be very different. We need all three areas. So what else can help when you are trying to get balance in your life and deal with bereavement at the same time? You may have heard of the following examples, as possible ways of coping and we wanted to give you a brief introduction to each one. Think carefully before making any choices as some of them can have downsides as well as positives. We are not claiming to be experts in any of these areas but simply want to offer you some basic information about things that you have probably heard mentioned by others.
