What Can I Expect At A Hindu Funeral?

Hindus believe that cremation frees the spirit of the deceased. There may be prayers said at the entrance to the crematorium. Small offerings such as sweetmeats and flowers may be passed round. Noise is an important part of Hindu rituals so there may be bells and horns. The eldest male in the family is regarded as chief mourner. He pays the family's respects to the deceased and is responsible for the lowering of the coffin after the scriptures have been read. He may also shave his head as a mark of respect. After the service the family will return home for a meal and prayers.
