I Don't Know What To Say To Them

When you see them for the first time after you have heard about the news, tell them you've been thinking of them. Don't be afraid to mention the dead person, most bereaved young adults are glad when you talk about them. However avoid well-meant statements such as "It gets easier with time" or "At least they're at peace now". These seldom help.
