What Can I Expect At An Islamic Funeral? Muslim funeral rites have developed over the centuries rather than coming from their holy book - The Koran. Most Muslims are buried within 24 hours of their death. Cremation is forbidden and the bodies are usually washed by close relatives first. The body is wrapped in a simple white shroud with prayers (salat) said at the time. The funeral is kept simple and respectful. Afterwards the body is taken to the burial ground. Women do not usually take part in this. Traditionally they do not use a coffin and place the body in the ground with their face to the right facing towards Makkah - the Muslim Holy City.
