What Happens During A Cremation? During the funeral service the coffin is lowered into a committal room. The coffin is labelled and once the mourners have left, the coffin is put into the cremation chamber. It is possible for two relatives to witness this. The coffin stays in the cremation chamber for 2 ½ - 3 hours. It is burned in temperatures between 800-1000 degrees centigrade. After this, the remains will be put into a hopper where they will be cooled with a fan. Any metal remains will be taken out and disposed of. After being cooled, the remains will be processed further to reduce any bone fragments to a fine white ash. Only one coffin is cremated at a time so that ashes do not get mixed up.
